Transitions
A transition is a word or
phrase that connects units of thought within a sentence, between sentences,
and between paragraphs. There are five common kinds of transitions: addition,
comparison, contrast, example, and conclusion/summary.
1) ADDITION
transitions show that you are adding more information to what you have said.
Some common addition
transitions are:
again besides furthermore next
also finally in
addition second
and first last still
and then further moreover too
2) COMPARISON transitions
show that you are highlighting similarities between two (or more) things,
ideas, etc.
Some common comparison
transitions are:
in the same way similarly likewise
by comparison
3) CONTRAST transitions
show that you are displaying differences between two (or more) things, ideas,
etc.
Some common contrast
transitions are:
after all
conversely in contrast on the other
hand
although despite
that in spite of otherwise
and yet even
so instead still
at the same time even
though nevertheless though
but however
on the contrary yet
4) EXAMPLE
transitions provide support for what you have stated.
