Idioms and Slang

 

 

All-nighter:       expression that means ‘to stay up all night’

                        “I pulled an all-nighter before my final exam”

 

Buff:                 someone who has well defined muscles.

 

Cat nap:           a short sleep; usually about 20-30 minutes

 

Corner store:    a store that provides many different kinds of items ie: food, magazines, movies, lottery tickets, etc.

 

Hit the hay:      expression that means ‘go to bed’

                        “I’m going to hit the hay”

 

Junkie:             someone who is addicted to something

                        “He’s a hamburger junkie”

 

Lighten-up:      an expression that tells someone to relax/not be too serious.

Movie buff:       someone who knows a lot about movies.

 

That’s not the point: expression that means someone is focusing on a topic/area that does not concern what you are telling  them.

 

Veg:                 a word that means relax

                        “I just want to veg tonight” = “I just want to relax tonight”

 

You’re missing the point:         expression to say that someone does not understand what you are telling them.
